What a wonderful story. And to the point without preaching. God! I can't imagine hiking in over punji prongs and through vines afoot off the ground.

I really enjoyed this! It reminded me of my experience harvesting salmon at our remote set net camp in western Alaska. We returned to our camp each summer for 17 years. We learned so much about ourselves from working in a variety of weather conditions and tides. All the birds, plants and animals; ourselves included, were connected to the salmon's complex cycle which is equal part science and mystery. Nature was in control and we were all at her mercy! It was quite the parade of joys and travails... On years when we made little money, we would tell each other that the experience of being there was worth whatever amount it was that we'd hope to have made!

Gotta chime in here--living small is a lot easier. You don't need as much, and you value what you have. I like my 350 sf house. BUT we need to change the zoning laws--I am only allowed my house because it was built before 1920, and grandfathered in. Please let us have less than 600 sf houses--these do NOT take away property value, but add to it with quality designs.

A wonderful opening of the promise and "magical thinking" that still grips many outsiders' hopes and beliefs about Çalifornia/America. Kim's placing of the hard facts of geography and power politics within the more broadly grasped understanding of Didion and Steinbeck and many more sensitive minds and hearts brings the completion of California to the front of much that is and will be challenging in the future.

My grandparents always had bluejays (I don't know what species) living in the trees outside their breakfast room in their house in Redding. I have a million memories of those sassy birds, squawking loudly and bossing other birds around. The breakfast room was high enough so we could get a close up view of them in the branches. It was fascinating to watch them as we ate our meals.
